Doing a Internet startup is very similar to "buy sell stock".

1. Both are very easy. These days, create a PHP website is as easy as
to open an account in eTrader or and other online brokers.

2. Money seems easy. At first glance, it seems very easy to make money
in stock market. Just buy low and sell high, how difficult is it ?
But how many people really make money in stock market ? (Jim Simons,
Warrent Buffet, etc)

This is true for Internet startup. Create a website, do some
promotion, then people will come to your website, then to get
millions $ valuation, how difficult can it be ?

3. Founders of Internet startups and "traders in stock market" all
think they have some secrets to beat market.

Internet startup founders may think they have a "better social
networking web2.0" ideas with latest "PHP + Ruby + Ajax + …."

Stock traders thought they are doing something unique in picking
stocks.

4. There are angel investors and institutional investment in both
cases.

A stock trader can ask their family and friends to put seed money to
support his "trading plan". If he really doing well, he can raise
institutional money and start his hedge fund.

Same is true for Internet startups.

So next time, when you think an Internet startup ideas, try to think the day traders in "stock cafe".
